A major part of the design brief has been to focus on the building’s environmental impact, and so the design incorporates passive strategies that make best use of orientation, carefully selected materials, high levels of thermal insulation, and thermal mass.
The home is constructed of a local brick to the ground floor, with locally forested untreated oak cladding above. The large high performance windows make best use of available natural light and heat from the winter sun, while the projecting eaves and balcony protects the house from the heat of the summer sun.
The house also features systems to provide heating and hot water by solar power, to collect rainwater for reuse, and to treat foul waste on site whilst allowing for easy future installation of wind and photovoltaic power generation.
