From a competition entry, Sidell Gibson was chosen to design the Dorchester First School on Duchy of Cornwall land on the edge of Poundbury in Dorchester. The development of the design involved detailed co-ordination of the aims of the Dorset County Council Education Department and the Duchy of Cornwall in order to secure planning permission. The impressively high internal spaces with their traditional exposed trusses produce an external roofline, which sweeps down to intimately scaled brick and flint walls.
